Is the Wii U the Start of the Next Generation?

There has been an alarmingly high amount of discussion recently, from both industry professionals and amateurs, about whether or not the Wii U is a next generation console. It seems that many in the industry are more ignorant than I thought. The Wii U will feature graphics that seem comparable to the PS3 and Xbox 360 and a few of its launch games are ports of current generation titles. So its a current generation console apparently.

Are people f***ing INSANE!

A generational shift is not defined by any one particular feature, its defined by having something that the previous generation did not. The N64 had 3D graphics, the PS1 had two sticks, the Xbox had Xbox Live, the PS3 had far more powerful graphics and Blu Ray discs and the 360 gave us achievements and better graphics. They all did something that the previous generation did not do so they were considered to be 'next-gen'.

The Wii U, apparently, is not.

The thing is people who think this have either been living in a cave with no access to the outside world for the last twelve months, get hard ons because of amazing graphics or are simply mentally unstable to the point that they should probably be locked up! The Wii U might not represent a huge graphical leap forward but it is the first home console to fully realise dual screen gaming, to not rely on the TV, to feature a dedicated in console social network (Miiverse) and is also the first console to have HD Nintendo games. Is this not enough?! What more do you people want?!

I'm sorry if changing the way we play games isn't enough of a step forward for you, maybe next time will Nintendo will also end world hunger, bring the world universal and everlasting peace and cure all forms of terminal illness.

The fact is that the Wii U is a next generation console and the next generation begins on Sunday. People need to stop bitch ranting about graphics and remember that they are games consoles not graphics processors. It's the games that count and Nintendo has improved upon them and given us something new. This is what a new generation is about. I know there are plenty of sane individuals out there who have the sense to realise that the Wii U is a next generation console but to all of those who don't will you please lock yourselves away from gaming society?
