The thing at the top of virtually every gamer's Christmas list this year will be one of the three new generation consoles. Providing you have the money to afford one of them the choice can be quite daunting unless you just ask them and spoil the surprise, so I'll give you a quick guide to choosing.
If they're the sort of gamer who plays Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, Uncharted, essentially 'hardcore' games, and if their main focus is on the games, then go with the PS4. It's the most powerful console ever made and of the three new ones it puts the most emphasis on standard gamers and games. If they want a great gaming experience but also use a console for its multimedia features (Skype, Netflix, Internet browsing etc.) then go with the Xbox One. It combines a great gaming console with a living room entertainment hub. If their the sort who wants to focus on gaming but tends to enjoy something different to the standard games then definitely go with the Wii U. It offers something incredibly unique and innovative. Also it's considerably cheaper and has a much more robust library of games as it's a year older than the other two.
If you're not buying them a new console, or if you are but want something else as well, then you are still spoilt for choice. The old consoles (Xbox 360, PS3) still have plenty of life left in them with new games like Final Fantasy XIII-3, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 and Dark Souls 2 and a pre order for one of these games would be appreciated by almost any gamer. Or if you'd prefer a voucher for their consoles online shop then that's also a great idea because these days there are countless games that can only be bought and downloaded through the console.
If you're looking for something gifty that isn't a game then look below at the list I provided last year, or, if you're in the UK, simply walk into your nearest Forbidden Planet for ideas. Whatever your plan is, gamers this year have far more choice than they ever have before and there really is something for everyone.
With Christmas fast approaching I thought it would be a good idea to offer a few suggestions for Christmas presents to get gamers that aren't actually games. I know a lot of people struggle with this so hopefully this list will help.
A Mario money tin would be bloody awesome, its only small and cheap and would make a great stocking filler.
There are obviously thousands of strategy guides that would be great but also you could consider a book on gaming such All Your Base are Belong to Us.
Liquid Snake Jacket
Most gamers like Metal Gear and if they fancy a bit of dressing up then this would be great. It would be cool for Halloween too.
Models or Figures or Mugs and Posters!
These are the most obvious ones or the 'oh crap I have no idea what to get him/her' ideas.
Most big gaming franchises will have models or figures available to buy. Just Google whoever your buying for's favourite game and look for models of the characters to buy.
The same goes for mugs and posters, they are easy to find and aren't too much money.
PSN Vouchers etc.
Vouchers for online stores such as PS Store, XBLA, Nintendo eShop or Steam are great. I don't really buy downloadable games during the year because if I have money then there will always be a physical release that interests me more but if I had a voucher then I would be far more inclined to download a game so I'd stop missing out on some of the year's best titles.
There are plenty of replica weapons for lots of games. For Assassins's Creed there's a replica Hidden Blade, for Resident Evil there's an air gun. Google a game the person you're buying for likes and look for replica weapons and you'll find some cool ideas for people who like their gaming memorabilia.
I hope this list helps some of you out, I should warn you its mainly based on stuff that I think is cool and so may not appeal to everyone for Christmas.
