So you make two incredibly successful and revered games and then your boss fires you because he wants to work on smaller things.
No, thought not.
Well that's what's happened at Irrational Games. The team behind Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite has been given the boot (apart from 15 members)! The Bioshock licence has been given to 2K so presumably the series isn't dead, though how it will cope without Levine's input is worrisome to say the least.
The issue here though is that it seems dozens upon dozens of people have lost their jobs for no other reason than to satisfy one mans creative whims. He wants to make narrative driven games with a smaller team, fair enough but don't close down your bloody studio! The people there would have and should have been proud to work on System Shock 2, Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite and now, unless 2K decides to open a new studio (but then why have Irrational close at all?!) these people have no studio and may never work on a game series as classic as Bioshock again.
Of course there'll be potential financial ramifications for these people as well, I'm sure they got some sort of severance deal, you can't just fire everyone after all, but still, they may not be able to find an equivalent job with the sort of pay they are used to.
With any luck Levine will offer up a new statement and rid us of our fears of him having been a bit of an arse but we'll have to wait and see.
