Smash Bros. 3DS Review

I know I said I wouldn't post today but I had to review this game. 

Smash Bros. on a handheld. Never thought it would work. 

Well it does. 

Smash Bros. for 3DS is absolutely incredible, it does have a couple of notable flaws but it manages to remain fun, deep and long lasting despite these. The character roster is absolutely huge, with all your favourite Nintendo characters and some great additions like Mega Man and Shulk (from Xenoblade Chronicles). The roster only gets bigger as you unlock more and more characters and learning to master each one is incredibly enjoyable. 

New fighters like the Wii Fit Trainer and The Villager are both hilarious and great fun to play as. Little Mac does seem a tiny bit over powered but punching Charizard in the face as a boxer will never get old. 

The game features numerous modes of play. Of course you've got your typical out and out Smash where you can play with up to three people or CPU players across whatever characters and stages you've unlocked. There's also the classic mode which sees you face off against numerous challenges accord several branching paths to unlock new characters, trophies and items to customise your fighters and Mii Fighters with. If you want to unlock cooler things then the difficulty can be scaled up to 9 if you fancy more of a challenge, this is also great for when you start to get better with certain characters. 

There's also Smash Run which sees you equip items and boosts, fight enemies across an evolving stage and then fight in a final battle at the end against CPU opponents who have been acquiring power ups.  It's a fun distraction and is varied enough to spend quite a lot of time with. It's hardly going to be a mainstay once you get good at fighting other players but it's fun nonetheless. There's also a bunch of mini games, including an amusing Angry Birds style one, which are fun but you'll probably only spend a few minutes with. 

As well as the roster of fighters you can also create Mii fighters, armed with the things you unlock across the other modes. These items can also be applied to the normal fighters but, in both cases, these can only be used locally. I guess they didn't want things to be unfair online. 

The game is very good looking and the frames seem to be locked at a solid 60FPS which is impressive but it can be hard to tell what's going on when the camera pulls back in a four player game. Still, your eyes adjust and you do get used to it. Some have also criticised the controls for the game but I haven't noticed any issue, thing is I'm not a hardcore fighter so it might be something you only notice if you're a certain standard. The other issue, which is perhaps the biggest, is that online matches can lag. It doesn't always happen but when it does it's noticeable and can really screw up a game. Still I'm sure this will be fixed soon enough. 

Ultimately Smash Bros. works great on the 3DS. Yes a few things need to be ironed out but all of these issues are things that can be fixed and I am confident that they will be. Even with these issues though it's certainly a game worth your time. 

The thing is whether or not, after buying this, you want to buy the Wii U version. I know the Wii U version will have all sorts of unique features and will have nicer graphics and support Amiibo and Gamecube controllers but, ultimately, it will be the same game. The issues with Smash Bros. on the 3DS, as I've already said, are all fixable so the game will likely go from being great to near perfect. By releasing this on 3DS they've made it far less likely I'll spend £40-50 on the Wii U version.
