Star Wars: The Force Awakens is amazing, surpassed only by the incredible Empire Strikes Back. Selling Lucasfilm to Disney is the best thing to happen to Star Wars since 1977.
The joy, humour and simple pleasure of the original trilogy is merged with the deeper ideas that the prequel trilogy tried (and failed) to introduce. Just like the cast that stars in it the film is the perfect blend of old and new. Rey, Finn and Poe are a great new trio of heroes and BB-8 is a triumph in terms of just how emotive he can be. Kylo Ren, Supreme Leader Snoke and The First Order are a worthy follow on from The Empire and the blend of amazing CGI and physical props makes the film a treat to look at.
Abrams' confidence as a director shines throughout and his visual flair really adds to the enjoyment of the numerous battles. Every actor gives a truly great performacne, with only a couple of the more minor characters coming across as even remotely two dimensional (sorry Captain Phasma) but these are due to screen time rather than poor acting.
The film is full of nods and references to the original trilogy and even some very overt visual homages, it's a treat to watch them and they don't seem cheap because at the same time as exploring the past the film sets itself up for the future.
I cannot wait to see the spin off films and the rest of the core saga, as a launch platform for the continued growth of the Star Wars universe The Force Awakens is a roaring success.
